Finally, we
made it to the last road course!! And the car is still not
broken yet. Frankly, I’m surprised myself given what the
little beast as been through. Road America has been at the
back of my head since the start. And not in a good way.
You see, it’s a very very high speed track in which fast
cars will see upwards of 140mph no less than 3 times per
lap. That’s A LOT of stress for a little 500+hp 2.0 liter
no matter how you look at it. It would really suck to have
a mechanical failure here. The good new? Judging by the
points, we don’t need to kick ass overall at this track.
Because doing so won’t help in the long run. We’re
currently at 6th place overall and 2nd
in class. All we need to do is another 1st in
class and we have a shot at a class win. We may even creep
up to a Top 5 finish overall which is far better than any of
us expected after the first day.

Take a long
look at Andrew and Adam Firestone’s STi. Because soon, it
will be stuffed into a tire wall

Does our
Little EVO look out of place in this run group? I think
so….

Another
silly picture which hits home just how unexpectedly well our
little EVO is standing up to the big boys.

PVO’s
factory-backed Dodge Viper is experiencing blow by
problems. Each session, it is filling up its make-shift
Aquafina catch can with oil. Come on now, the motor makes
around 90bhp/liter whereas ours is boosted to the tune of
250-275bhp/liter. Who would have thought that it would be
the big V-10 that is experiencing ring seal problems?

Andrew
Firestone hamming it up with the TV interviewer just after
he crashed his car into a tire wall.

Here’s a
good picture of our car at the end of the day. How’d we
do? We came 1st in class (Hurray!) and 6th
overall behind the usual suspects as well as Adee’s Winston
Cup-esque race truck and a supercharged ZO6 Corvette. Not
bad. And we’re still running! Now, all we need to do is to
out-skidpad Fuller’s STi which is currently the points
leader in our Class. Did someone say “Skidpad?” Yes… it’s
historically not our best showing and still brings back bad
memories.. Oh well… time to make some phone calls and make
some quick fixes.

Being on
good terms with Mitsubishi USA has a number of benefits.
First, we get cars given to us when we beg for them.
Second, we have access to some of the best dealers/service
centers in the US. This time, our pals at MMC put us in
contact with a friendly dealership in Chicago where we were
treated to some transmission fluid changes and a compression
test. Compression, as usual, was perfect as can be. Oil
consumption was essentially zero. As for skidpad
preparation, we had Swavek (the tech pictured above) dump a
few ounces of Redline Friction Modifier into our
differential oils. This magic little fluid is used to
“loosen up” tightly packed differentials. Just what we
needed for tomorrow’s critical skidpad adventure. A quick
blast around in the parking lot revealed a total absence of
low speed binding! Fingers crossed….
